SEATTLE - (April 22, 2011) — The Washington State Recycling Association (WSRA) will honor Virginia Mason and the Boeing Classic for outstanding recycling achievements at its Recyclers of the Year awards banquet May 24 in Pasco, Wash. VM is being named "Institutional Recycler of the Year" for its comprehensive approach to environmental stewardship with strategic staff involvement through its EnviroMason conservation program. Virginia Mason's Boeing Classic PGA Tournament Striving for Zero Waste program is also being honored as "Event Recycler of the Year" for diverting more than 90 percent of 2010 tournament waste from landfill disposal.
"These awards show that our past five years of organizational focus, employee support and participation in resource-conservation efforts are really paying off," says Steve Grose, administrative director, Support Services. "We're now leading the industry in recycling, and we're getting noticed. This is just the beginning — we're not content to sit back and relax. We have lots of great conservation ideas coming from all parts of the organization, and we're looking forward to making more improvements in the year ahead. This is a great way to celebrate Earth Day!"
The WSRA chose to honor Virginia Mason and the Boeing Classic for several reasons, including:

  • 30 percent of all organizational waste generated at VM is recycled
  • 95 percent of VM cafeteria waste is recycled
  • 80 percent of VM surgical waste plastics are recycled
  • 92 percent of waste generated at the Boeing Classic was recycled, composted or reused

"On behalf of the Boeing Classic staff and over 1,000 volunteers who make it happen every year, we are honored to receive this award and grateful for the commitment of everyone involved who works hard to make this one of the greenest events around," says Joe Sirlin, director of operations, Boeing Classic.
