SEATTLE – (Dec. 14, 2020) – The Leapfrog Group, an independent national organization representing employers and other purchasers of health care, today announced its Fall 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, and once again awarded Virginia Mason an ‘A’ for achieving the highest national standards in patient safety.

Virginia Mason is one of 29 hospitals in the United States – and the only one in Washington state – to receive an ‘A’ in every grading cycle since the safety grade program began in 2012. This is Virginia Mason’s 18th consecutive ‘A’ grade. The grades are issued in the spring and fall of each year.

“To be consistently recognized for safety by The Leapfrog Group is an honor that affirms we are doing the right work and significantly benefitting the patients we serve,” said Virginia Mason Chairman and CEO Gary S. Kaplan, MD.

Leah Binder, president and CEO, The Leapfrog Group, described Virginia Mason’s consistent receipt of an ‘A’ for patient safety, year after year, as extraordinary. “We applaud Virginia Mason for protecting the lives and safety of patients and health care workers,” she said. “Given the immense challenges confronting the American health care system as it battles the COVID-19 pandemic, we need all hospitals to demonstrate such relentless dedication to their patients.”

Earlier this month, Leapfrog also designated Virginia Mason as a Top Hospital for its achievements in quality and safety. The medical center was among only 105 hospitals in the United States named a Top Hospital.

Leapfrog assigns letter grades of A, B, C, D and F to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms. Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to grade more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. Founded in 2000 by large employers and other health care purchasers, The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization driving a movement for giant leaps forward in health care quality and safety.
