Virginia Mason was recently honored with two awards from the American Heart Association (AHA) — one acknowledging the great work of the VM Stroke Center, and another recognizing VM for promoting good health with its staff.

Get With the Guidelines Award
Virginia Mason's Stroke Center was presented with the Gold-Plus Performance "Get With the Guidelines" Award based on achieving 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With the Guidelines Stroke Achievement indicators for two or more years, and achieving 75 percent or higher with at least six of the Get With the Guidelines Stroke Quality measures. Measures include aggressive use of specific medications, such as tPA, antithrombotics and DVT prophylaxis, along with steps such as smoking cessation, aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients. "This award reflects Virginia Mason's commitment to being one of the top hospitals in the country for providing quality and proven stroke care," says Michael Elliott, MD, Neurology.

Gold-Level Fit-Friendly Company
Virginia Mason was also recognized by the AHA with the Fit-Friendly award for 2011/2012 because of efforts to champion the health of staff by creating and promoting physical activity programs within the workplace. To qualify for the award, VM had to meet several criteria, including providing support for physical activity, promoting a wellness culture and providing healthy eating options for employees. Some of the wellness practices VM was noted for included promoting walking programs, providing support for biking and walking to work, discounted gym memberships, wellness newsletters and free health screening (blood and blood pressure checks) during the wellness campaign. "Virginia Mason cares about its team members and we are honored to receive this award recognizing our efforts to promote wellness at work," says Tom Cranney, manager, VM Benefits.
