Virginia Mason Earns Two Awards for Health Care Quality
SEATTLE – (May 10, 2017) – Virginia Mason will receive two awards Thursday, May 11, for its continuing work to further improve quality of care and the patient experience.
The 2017 Washington Awards for Healthcare Quality will be presented by Qualis Health at the Northwest Patient Safety Conference in SeaTac.
Virginia Mason will be recognized for its processes to reduce central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) and to identify and treat sepsis, a serious illness that occurs when the body has an overwhelming immune response to a bacterial infection. CLABSI and sepsis are the focus of initiatives at hospitals across the nation.
“Our changing health care landscape requires increasingly vigorous efforts to improve health care delivery and health outcomes in Washington and across the nation,” said Jonathan Sugarman, MD, MPH, president and CEO, Qualis Health. “The Qualis Health quality awards celebrate organizations that have transformed health care delivery for their communities – making a real difference for their patients and families. Their achievements exemplify progress toward critical aims for health care – better quality of care at a lower cost.”
Virginia Mason will be the only organization receiving two quality awards at the ceremony on Thursday. The medical center also received quality awards from Qualis Health in 2016, 2015, 2011, 2010 and 2009.
“Our passion for improving quality and safety has been recognized often by organizations that evaluate our industry,” said Virginia Mason Chairman and CEO Gary S. Kaplan, MD. “We are very proud of this recognition by Qualis Health and its affirmation that our teams are focused on the right work and truly making a difference for our patients.”
Other recipients of the quality awards from Qualis will include Kelley-Ross Pharmacy of Seattle. It is being recognized for a program in which pharmacists visit the homes of heart failure patients after they are discharged from inpatient care at Virginia Mason Hospital. The home-visit program model was designed by the Virginia Mason Heart Institute team, which then worked collaboratively with Kelley-Ross to implement the initiative. It has reduced hospital readmissions among heart failure patients.
