SEATTLE – (May 22, 2020) — Virginia Mason is No. 1 in the Washington Health Alliance’s new Community Checkup ranking of commercially insured medical groups with four or more providers for overall performance across a range of quality measures.

The Community Checkup empowers consumers to compare the performance of health care providers with each other, state averages and national benchmarks for categories spanning asthma care to well-child visits.

“Virginia Mason’s standing in the Community Checkup report is a testament to the focus on quality and safety across our organization,” said Gary S. Kaplan, MD, chairman and CEO. “Our team’s commitment to excellence distinguishes Virginia Mason and is making a difference in the lives of our patients.”

The 2019 report, released in April, states that “consistency in performance deserves special note” in recognizing that Virginia Mason is one of a select few organizations to be in the top five every year since 2015.

Also, Memorial Physicians LLC at Virginia Mason Memorial in Yakima is No. 6 among the approximately 100 commercially insured medical groups included in the Community Checkup ranking.

The Alliance uses as many as 31 measures to evaluate and rank the performance of medical groups, with separate rankings for commercially insured and Medicaid-insured. The Community Checkup includes information from the Common Measure Set for Health Care Quality and Cost, as well as additional quality measures on ambulatory and inpatient care. Measures focus on access to primary care (i.e., are children and adults visiting a primary care doctor at least once a year?); acute care (i.e., are hospitals doing all they can to promote patient safety and the best outcomes for patients?); prevention (i.e., are patients getting health screenings and immunizations they need to stay healthy?); and chronic care (i.e., are patients with chronic conditions getting care from their doctor that is recommended to help them manage their health?).

The Community Checkup brings together data-based results for 1,978 clinics, 376 medical groups, 123 hospitals, 16 health plans and 39 counties. It also provides an overview of statewide variation in quality performance; medical group variation on certain preventive care and health screenings; a special highlight on colorectal cancer screening in Washington state; and a review of Washington state health care spending.
