Surgical Site Infection Prevention Team Wins Award
Virginia Mason’s Surgical Site Infection Prevention Team was awarded the fourth annual Mary L. McClinton Patient Safety Award on March 11, 2009.
Surgical site infection (SSI) is the second most common hospital-acquired infection in the United States. The Surgical Site Infection Prevention Team developed, tested and implemented new approaches to reduce these infections in VM patients. This included new patient education tools, staff training and several technical and management improvements. The team’s work resulted in a significant reduction in surgical site infections at Virginia Mason.
The Mary L. McClinton Patient Safety Award was created to honor Mrs. McClinton, who died in Virginia Mason’s care in November 2004 due to a medical error. Her life and untimely death have been an inspiration to VM to do everything possible to eliminate avoidable death and injury.
