Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

Today women undergoing hysterectomy can benefit from better surgical techniques and advanced technology that improve recovery and reduce risk.

Laparoscopy is a surgical method to perform hysterectomy through small incisions using ultra-thin tools and a camera for viewing inside the body. This form of minimally invasive surgery usually eliminates the need for a large incision in the abdomen.

At Virginia Mason laparoscopic procedures may be performed with a robotic operating system. Virginia Mason gynecologic surgeons are skilled in performing hysterectomies using the da Vinci™ Surgical System. Da Vinci enables the surgeon to operate while controlling tools that bend and rotate with the dexterity of the human hand, all through incisions just a few millimeters long. A 3-D, high-definition view of the operative site guides the surgery, making even some complex procedures eligible for this less-invasive approach.

Potential benefits of robotic-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy can include

    • Less pain in recovery
    • Fewer complications and less risk of infection
    • Minimal scarring
    • A shorter hospital stay — usually overnight
    • A faster return to normal daily activities
    • Less blood loss

What happens during a robotic-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy?

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia with a specially trained medical team. The surgeon is positioned at a console, controlling the movement of the robotic instruments. Typically the operation is completed through three to five small abdominal incisions.

Robotic procedures allow for a more complex surgery if needed, such as removal of the cervix, ovaries or lymph nodes if cancer is suspected. The robotic system provides detailed visualization of the anatomy, which is ideally suited for safely operating around delicate structures in the abdomen.
