Application Information

The following residency training programs offered by Virginia Mason are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

The residency programs at Virginia Mason are small and highly competitive. We will offer the following number of positions for the 2023-24 academic year: The submission deadline for PGY 1 positions for all programs is Nov. 1, 2022.

Virginia Mason participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) where applicable.

Information for all medical school graduates

Virginia Mason only accepts application materials through the AAMC's ERAS program.

All applicants must be candidates for an MD or DO degree from an accredited school of medicine or college of osteopathic medicine upon application.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is REQUIRED prior to the start of our resident training programs. Make sure you sign up for an ACLS certification course during your fourth year. Check with your Dean’s office regarding ACLS training information.

ALL applicants must submit the Required MyERAS Application materials:

  • Completed ERAS Application form
  • Personal Statement
  • Medical School Transcripts
  • Dean’s Letter (MSPE)
  • Minimum of three (3) letters of recommendation on official letterhead, preferably from your core rotation department heads or preceptors 
  • USMLE Transcripts I and II preferred. Applicants who have previously failed any attempts at the USMLE step I and/or II will most likely be removed from further consideration.

We review ALL application documents to make our applicant selection. Applicants are selected based on their academic credentials, preparedness, aptitudes, abilities and communication skills, as well as personal qualities, such as motivation and integrity. Our interview season begins in late October 2022 and extends through January 2023. Applicants who are not selected for interview will receive a letter of regret.

Information for international medical school graduates

Graduates of international medical schools applying for internship or residency, must submit the above required application documents and must have applied for, or hold a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) to be considered for an interview.

Applicants who are not U.S. citizens must meet the current requirements for an appropriate U.S visa* as specified by the United States government.

*Virginia Mason Graduate Medical Education considers J1 Visa or permanent resident status.
