Pritikin Intensive Cardiac Rehab
Learn to Live a Heart-Healthy Life with Pritikin at Virginia Mason
At Virginia Mason, we know that heart attacks and other heart problems are life-changing events — and that people who have had one heart problem are more likely to have another. That’s why we offer an intensive cardiac rehabilitation program called Pritikin to help patients prevent future heart problems and lead longer, happier lives.
The Pritikin Program at Virginia Mason:
After a serious heart problem, many patients want to live healthier lifestyles, but don’t know where to start. This program helps people improve their heart health based on three pillars:
- Safe and effective exercise
- Good nutrition and healthy cooking
- Helping to achieve a mindset that continues these lifestyle changes
Pritikin is an intensive cardiac rehabilitation program that offers twice as many sessions as traditional rehab programs. Patients will have 72 sessions at the Virginia Mason Heart Institute over six months. Half of these sessions are fitness classes with experts who help patients learn safe and effective ways to exercise. The remaining sessions include workshops about nutrition, healthy cooking, stress and anxiety management, mood and relationship improvement and effective goal-setting.
Many insurance programs, including Medicare, cover the cost of Pritikin.
This program helps patients:
- Increase energy
- Decrease body fat
- Lower blood pressure
- Improve endurance and strength
- Decrease cholesterol
- Improve blood sugar control
Who is eligible for the Pritikin program?
Patients who have had the following conditions are eligible for Pritikin:
- Acute myocardial infarction in the last year
- Coronary artery bypass surgery
- Current stable angina pectoris
- Heart valve repair or replacement
- Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty/stenting
- Heart or heart-lung transplant
