Information About Union Rally Outside VM Today
July 10, 2006
To our patients and visitors
While you are at Virginia Mason (VM) today you may notice a group of people holding a rally outside the medical center on Terry Avenue (between University and Seneca streets). These are members of the Washington State Nurses Association (WSNA), a union representing registered nurses who work at Virginia Mason Hospital. Members of other unions may also be present.
Why are they rallying?
Rallies are being held nationwide the week of July 10-14 to bring attention to cases currently being considered by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) which may impact a nurse’s eligibility for union membership. Virginia Mason is not involved in these cases. VM was involved in a hearing last month where this issue was raised. However, the parties to the hearing, VM, WSNA and the NLRB, have agreed to a joint motion, which removes this particular issue from the case.
Will the rally affect patient care?
We do not expect the rally will impact patient care. Our staff will be making every effort to make certain patients and visitors do not experience delays or difficulties due to the rally.
