"I chose Virginia Mason and love being a part of the Virginia Mason team now because I was looking for a family of hilarious, intelligent people who are confident in their technical skills and take pride in teaching and passing on their clinical wisdom. I think the fact that many of our attendings returned to Virginia Mason after graduating from residency here, is objective proof of the clinical excellence of our surgical program and the unique comradery between residents, attendings and staff.  We celebrate one another’s successes and look out for one another, both in and out of work. We’re being led through cases by seniors on day 1 and log an above average number of cases by the end of our intern year, and overall. As a tertiary center accepting patients from the surrounding states’ medically underserved communities, like that which I grew up in and plan to return to as a rural general surgeon on the Oregon coast, we see the sickest of the sick and are prepared for anything in our new practice by the time we graduate. At the same time, many of our chiefs match into competitive fellowships and I appreciate the encouragement, support, and research opportunities from our attendings to make this an easy transition."

"I chose Virginia Mason because of the exceptional surgical training, compassionate people, and diversity in training experiences and pathology. I have been blown away by my time at Virginia Mason thus far. I am surrounded by amazing co-residents and attending physicians, and I am part of a residency program and hospital that values patient care and education. Living in Seattle has been wonderful, as it’s a short drive away from some amazing hiking and outdoor experiences. This program truly has everything and I am grateful to be a part of such an incredible group of people."

"Seattle is a great place to live and when I did my sub-internship here, I really enjoyed how friendly all the team members were. I liked that the graduating residents went on to a good mix of both fellowships and immediate practice, and I also liked the variety of training sites. I love my cohort of residents and feel like I can really depend on them and also have a great time outside the hospital with them."

"Throughout my time with Virginia Mason, from interview to practice on the wards and in the operating room, it has been apparent that the individual is valued. Team interactions are collaborative, productive, and rewarding because the patient is central and team members mutually respected. Virginia Mason is a unique program offering 'the best of both worlds.' Virginia Mason is a referral center with consistent exposure to complex surgical problems and excellent teaching surgeons, but is not so large an institution that the burden of numbers begins to take away from learning and operative opportunities. Virginia Mason is an excellent program in which to be a surgical resident, demonstrated by the program leadership's tangible responses to resident feedback and specific ambitions, especially in protecting and adapting education and training in our constantly advancing field."

"Virginia Mason provides me with a personalized surgical training, both in the OR and clinically, with attendings that advocate for their residents’ education in all settings. I love that I’m constantly reminded of how fun, challenging, and meaningful my career choice is. I chose Virginia Mason for the excellent operating experience, the close-knit resident family, the obvious patient-focused health care, the hospital’s environmental stewardship efforts, and (of course!) the beautiful location of Seattle."

"I love Virginia Mason because it gave me co-workers that became family. When I was applying for residency, I was searching for a medium-sized program with early operative experience. Not only does our program have that, but it also embodies camaraderie. With the support of my co-residents and teaching faculty, to the scrub techs and medical assistants, I thrive off the environment they create. I’m excited to complete my training here."

"I chose Virginia Mason because of the wide variety and complexity of patients and clinical experiences available here. Our connections to referral centers throughout Washington state and Alaska bring in cases ranging from a complicated pancreatic cancer requiring a whipple to an uncomplicated hernia needing an outpatient operation and everything in between. We are also affiliated with Seattle Children’s and Harborview (our county hospital), allowing residents exposure to world-class care of pediatric surgery and burn/trauma patients. The other major factor that drew me to Virginia Mason is the focus on resident education. Having only one clinical fellow allows residents to be side-by-side with attendings for cases and research opportunities. This enhances our exposure to the more complicated surgical cases in a way that is rare in today’s larger academic centers. Our faculty and administration are very supportive of resident education and quality of life, pushing us academically while taking a genuine interest in our lives outside of the hospital. All of these reasons have made residency at Virginia Mason both a fulfilling and enjoyable experience."

"I chose Virginia Mason for its excellent operative experience and opportunity to participate in fellow-level cases as juniors, collegiality and supportive environment. Seattle is also a great city to live in - amazing restaurants; year round farmers markets; easy access to mountains, lakes, the ocean, and snow in the winter; and a great arts scene."

"I chose Virginia Mason because I could tell this was a place committed to training high-quality surgeons. I watched the chief operate during my interview and I could sense confidence and poise in the OR. I understood that the program leadership was actively engaged in evolving resident education and this progressive spirit permeated the atmosphere. I was excited about the high volume hepatobiliary, thoracic, colorectal, bariatric, endocrine, and vascular experience. Despite the fact that we no longer have an apprenticeship model, this idea is still prevalent and we strive to foster that unique training environment despite having multiple attendings on each service. I get along well with the people in this program. My experience has exceeded my expectations and I would make the same choice again, knowing what I do now."
