Dr. Kuo is the Director of Hepatology at Virginia Mason Medical Center. He is a transplant hepatologist who is board certified in both Transplant Hepatology and Gastroenterology. Dr. Kuo received his BA from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD and his MD from the University of California, San Francisco. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard Medical School) in Boston before returning to UCSF for his fellowship training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Prior to being recruited to Virginia Mason, Dr. Kuo was Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego where he served as the Director of Hepatology and the Medical Director of the Liver Transplant Program.

Dr. Kuo’s clinical interests include liver transplantation, management of complications of cirrhosis, liver cancer, treatment of hepatitis B and C, fatty liver disease, PSC, PBC, and autoimmune hepatitis. At Virginia Mason, his research interests focus on the treatment of viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, liver cancer, and development of anti-fibrotic agents. He is the author of numerous peer-reviewed research articles, book chapters, and editorials.

Dr. Kuo has been honored as a Top Doctor by US News and World Report and was recognized as a Fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (FAASLD). He is a core faculty member of the International Antiviral Society-USA, a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), and the American Society for Transplantation (AST). He serves in various leadership positions with AST and the American Board of Internal Medicine.
