Minimally Invasive Approach

Blockages or other disorders of the vascular system were traditionally treated with open surgery. Advances in techniques and technology allow many of these problems to be treated with balloons, stents, or other devices delivered inside the vessels via small catheters. Virginia Mason’s vascular surgeons have specialized training and clinical expertise to combine these open and minimally invasive approaches to develop the best treatment plan for each individual patient.

Hybrid Operating Room

These treatments are made possible by our state-of-the-art hybrid operating room, which incorporates advanced imaging technology into a traditional surgery suite. In addition to bringing the most advanced technology to each surgical case, patient safety is enhanced in a hybrid operating room by allowing an endovascular procedure to easily transition to a more complex surgical procedure, if needed.

Trans-carotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR)

TCAR is a hybrid procedure used to treat narrowing of the carotid arteries. These arteries supply blood to the brain and can be responsible for stroke. TCAR allows a stent to be placed from a small incision in the neck, and uses a unique flow-reversal system to protect the brain during the procedure, reducing the risk of stroke. TCAR allows us to help patients who might not be good candidates for either endarterectomy or stenting.

Endovascular Repair of Complex Aortic Aneurysms with Fenestrated and Branched Stent-Grafts

Abdominal aortic aneurysms are enlarged areas of the main blood vessel in the body which, if left untreated, can rupture. These are often treated with a minimally-invasive procedure where a fabric-covered stent seals the aneurysm from the inside. However, if the aneurysm involves the vital arterial branches supplying the kidneys and intestines, there are more limited options available for treatment. Virginia Mason’s vascular surgeons offer treatment with customized physician-modified grafts, where holes are created to allow blood to continue to flow to these branch vessels after sealing the aneurysm. This allows us to provide a minimally-invasive option to patients who would otherwise be forced to undergo a large, open operation.
