The pulmonary medicine team helps patients through all stages of lung disease.
Many patients come to us with symptoms like shortness of breath or a persistent cough. Others have been told that they have an abnormal X-ray or CT scan, or been diagnosed with a respiratory problem or lung cancer. Our experts pinpoint what is causing your respiratory problem and deliver treatments that give you the best chance to recover. Here’s what sets us apart:

Patient-centered Care

Healthgrades 2017 100 Best Pulmonary Care Award

We combine the personal attention of a clinic with the services of a major medical center. Our team members goes out of their way to make sure patients get appointments quickly and receive test results as soon as possible – usually within 24 hours. Our patients also have access to specialized clinics throughout Virginia Mason, such as our Sleep Disorders Center and our Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Department. We coordinate your care among these departments and set up all your appointments on the same day. This saves you from scheduling multiple appointments on your own and from making extra trips from home or work.

“We create a warm, trusted place for our patients, and they often tell us that our clinic feels like their home away from home. They know our staff by their first names, and they know that when they ask us to do something, we will get it done. When you come to our clinic, you’re more than a patient – you’re a person who deserves the best possible care.” – Anthony Gerbino, MD

State-of-the-art Diagnostic Technology

Our team uses the latest tools to make fast, accurate diagnoses. For example, we have special expertise in using a tiny scope – called a bronchoscope – to look inside your airway and see what might be wrong. We have Seattle’s oldest bronchoscopy program and we do more bronchoscopies any other clinic in the state. This means our physicians have unparalleled experience at using bronchoscopy to diagnose lung problems. We’re also home to a state-of-the-art pulmonary function testing laboratory, where we measure how well the lungs take in air and transfer oxygen to the blood.

Expert Physicians

All of our physicians are board certified in pulmonary medicine and we have top specialists in interstitial lung disease, sarcoidosis and other pulmonary conditions. We are up-to-date on the latest therapies and involved in clinical trials of experimental treatments. This enables us to help you through all stages of lung disease. We work closely with your other physicians to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your condition and your lifestyle.

Lung Cancer Screening and Care

The pulmonary medicine team plays an integral role in Virginia Mason’s Lung Cancer Program. Our providers use CT imaging to screen patients for lung cancer as well as overseeing the Pulmonary Nodule Program. With this program, we assess hundreds of nodules each year. Our goal is to identify which nodules are likely to be malignant. This helps patients get the treatment they need and avoid unnecessary procedures.

When concerning nodules are found, we use advanced techniques to help diagnose cancer and have a conference with doctors in many different specialties about the cancer treatment. This helps us make sure every patient gets the best care.
