SEATTLE – (Aug. 8, 2017) – Virginia Mason is again recognized as one of the top hospitals in Seattle and Washington state by U.S. News & World Report, which released its annual Best Hospitals list today.

The medical center achieved high-performing status in gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery; aortic valve surgery; heart bypass surgery; colon cancer surgery; lung cancer surgery; hip replacement; and knee replacement. Virginia Mason is rated excellent for patient experience in aortic valve and heart bypass surgery; and in hip and knee replacement.

This is the eighth consecutive year Virginia Mason has been in the Best Hospitals spotlight.

For the 2017-18 Best Hospitals program, U.S. News used data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and other sources to evaluate and rank nearly 5,000 hospitals on how well they perform across multiple categories, including patient satisfaction, preventing prolonged hospitalizations and reducing hospital readmissions. U.S. News experts analyzed more than 2,600 metrics for 25 data-driven specialties, procedures and conditions.

U.S. News began publishing its hospital rankings in 1990 to identify medical centers in various specialties best suited to patients whose illnesses pose unusual challenges because of underlying conditions, procedure difficulty, advanced age or other medical issues that add risk. Hospitals do not pay to be evaluated for, nor included in, the rankings.

Earlier this year, Virginia Mason was named one of the 50 best hospitals in the United States by Healthgrades, an independent company that uses Medicare data to evaluate hospitals’ performance in multiple categories.
