During a vaginal hysterectomy, the uterus is removed through an incision in the vagina. This approach is typically used for conditions that do not require access or examination of the whole abdomen, such as prolapse, abdominal bleeding and cervical and endometrial dysplasia. Vaginal hysterectomy usually involves a shorter time in the hospital and faster recovery than an open abdominal hysterectomy. However, if a woman’s uterus is enlarged, vaginal hysterectomy may not be possible. Previous surgeries that may have left abnormal scarring or the presence of a large pelvic mass may also require a different approach to treatment.
