Liposuction can help many patients reshape and contour specific areas of the body that have localized fat deposits such as the abdomen, hips or thighs, and and arms. For those areas that are unresponsive to diet and exercise, liposuction is often performed with other surgical procedures, to improve a patient’s body contouring and proportion.

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction Marked Up Leg

The procedure involves making a small incision and inserting a hollow tube that can be manipulated by the surgeon deep within fat pockets. A vacuum-pressure unit then eliminates unwanted fat. The procedure can vary in length depending on the extent of fat to be removed, but is typically performed on an outpatient basis, under regional or local anesthetic.

Recovery occurs gradually after liposuction. Many patients can return to work in a week, wearing a snug elastic dressing to control swelling and bleeding, but should avoid strenuous activity for a while. Most swelling and discoloration will disappear within a month or two after surgery but some signs may linger for six months or more.

Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

The best candidates for liposuction are physically and psychologically healthy, of relatively normal weight and under 50 years old. The procedure is not recommended for people who have had recent surgery on the area to be reshaped, experience poor circulation or have any major medical problems.

Realistic Expectations with Cosmetic Surgery and Liposuction

If you're thinking about cosmetic surgery, it's important to realize that the surgery will not automatically give you an ideal body. You still will need to eat sensibly and get plenty of exercise.

Nevertheless, most patients are pleased that they decided on abdominal plastic surgery and feel that the long-term benefits outweigh any short-term discomforts. They often report a greater sense of self-worth and generally feel more attractive.
