Virginia Mason's Neuroscience Institute is dedicated to the diagnosis of epilepsy, and improving the lives of patients with epilepsy. Epilepsy represents a common neurologic disorder that can cause recurrent seizures — a neurologic event associated with increased electrical activity in the brain.

To help diagnose epilepsy, a thorough clinical history will be conducted. Additional tests may include:

  • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to evaluate the structure of the brain
  • EEG (electroencephalogram) to monitor brain waves
  • Cardiac tests to evaluate heart conditions that might mimic seizures from the brain
  • Blood tests
