Virginia Mason Receives International Climate Champion Award


In 2017 Virginia Mason was named a recipient of the 2020 Challenge Climate Champion Award from Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) for leading efforts to respond to climate change. Global Green and Healthy Hospitals is an international network of hospitals, health systems and health organizations dedicated to reducing their environmental footprint and promoting public and environmental health.

Virginia Mason pledged to reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by the year 2020 and received the gold medal in Climate Leadership and Climate Resiliency categories.

EnviroMason Partners with Washington Green Schools
EnviroMason and Community Benefit are proud to partner with Washington Green Schools to help educate the next generation of environmental leaders. An example of Washington Green Schools in action is the work students at Seattle World School are performing to make their campus a green and healthy place to learn. The new school garden, built in partnership with Washington Green Schools, connects classroom learning with environmental action. Through Washington Green Schools, students are learning how they can tackle environmental challenges facing their community.

Virginia Mason Receives Top Honors from Practice Greenhealth

Virginia Mason received Practice Greenhealth’s Top 25 Environmental Excellence Award for the third year in a row. This prestigious environmental achievement award is reserved for hospitals that lead the industry with innovations in sustainability and exemplify the best in environmental excellence, adhere to the highest standards for environmental practices in health care and have the documentation to prove their success.


Virginia Mason was also recognized in the top 10 performing hospitals in 10 categories of Practice Greenhealth’s Circles of Excellence Awards, the highest honor in the nation. The 10 categories are: engaged leadership, reducing waste, using safer chemicals, greening the operating room, serving healthy food, environmentally preferable purchasing, energy efficiency, water conservation, climate preservation and green building achievements.
