A Message from the Chairman and CEO
Exciting innovations and difficult challenges are themes every year in health care, and 2017 was no exception. Our management methodology, the Virginia Mason Production System, helps us develop game-changing ideas that can improve the delivery of care in ways that are difficult for others to match.
This past year, we turned our focus to a number of critical issues, including improving the way opioids are prescribed throughout our organization. Our multidisciplinary approach is proving effective both at Virginia Mason and at Virginia Mason Memorial. We also continue to work each day to improve our patients’ health care experiences. By proactively engaging with patients in our ongoing improvement work, we’re gaining a deeper understanding of how to improve the care they need.
Others in our community and across the country continue to notice our efforts, too. Through a concentrated team effort and an organization-wide commitment to quality and patient safety, Virginia Mason was recognized as a Leapfrog Top Hospital for the 12th consecutive year. We are the only hospital in the U.S. to receive the designation every year.
Early in 2018, Virginia Mason was named by Healthgrades as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for the second straight year. This achievement places Virginia Mason among the top 1 percent of all health care facilities in the nation. Because quality and safety are foundational to the culture at Virginia Mason, the recognition by The Leapfrog Group and Healthgrades is affirming for our team members and underscores that we are focused on the right work.
We clearly are not standing still. This past February, we were very proud to officially welcome Edmonds Family Medicine to the Virginia Mason family. And our partnership with CHI Franciscan Health, which was finalized early in 2017, has resulted in a number of key collaborations. Chief among them was the opening of a leading-edge radiation oncology unit at Highline Medical Center earlier in 2018. Further expanding our reach into central Washington, the integration of Yakima’s Virginia Mason Memorial into our health system continues to provide benefits to patients on both sides of the Cascades.
As we look forward to the rest of 2018 and the years ahead, we know there will be many more opportunities to bring exceptional health care to even more patients in our regional community and beyond. We are actively engaged in this work, and know that we could not do it without your support. Thank you for partnering with us on this exciting journey.
