Gary S. Kaplan, MD, Chairman and CEO, Virginia Mason

Dear Friends,

Another 12 months are behind us as we present our 2016 annual report. This past year, like most years, we were faced with the challenges of an evolving health care landscape.

Our team adapted and succeeded regardless of what was happening in the environment around us. We were able to do this because we remain true to who we are. Our core values are unwavering. Virginia Mason has been a vital part of this community since 1920, and we will continue to improve the health of our patients for many years to come.

We are entering into our second year of integration with Virginia Mason Memorial, and have identified many opportunities to serve patients on both sides of the mountains. And we’re looking forward to realizing the full potential of our strategic affiliation and clinical partnership with CHI Franciscan Health.

Because of our teams’ unwavering focus on our patients, we continue to receive recognition for excellence in quality and safety:

  • At the beginning of 2017, we were named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades, putting Virginia Mason in the top 1 percent of hospitals nationwide for consistent, year-over-year, superior clinical performance across a broad spectrum of care.

  • For the 11th consecutive year, The Leapfrog Group named Virginia Mason a Top Hospital based on its evaluation of quality and safety at medical centers across the nation. We are the only hospital in the U.S. to be designated every year and the only recipient in Washington state in 2016.

  • For the third year in a row, we were recognized as one of the 50 Greenest Hospitals in America, as we continue to be a sustainability leader on a global, national and regional level.

Looking forward, we remain well-positioned for the future. Our management methodology, the Virginia Mason Production System, continues to provide the foundation upon which we base everything we do to improve the lives of our patients. That clarity of purpose — always putting the patient first — will help us continue to be a special place to provide care and serve our community. I hope you will enjoy reading this report to learn more about the inspirational work of the incredible people who make Virginia Mason a truly remarkable place.

Sincerely,

Gary S. Kaplan, MD
Chairman and CEO
