Letter from the Chief Residents

Congratulations on your decision to pursue a career in anesthesiology, and thank you for considering Virginia Mason’s Anesthesiology Residency Program in Seattle! Through strong clinical training and modern didactics in a close-knit community environment, Virginia Mason strives to provide an outstanding training experience that allows each resident to reach their maximum potential.

With a small class size of 9 residents per year, our program takes pride in its ability to foster a close, personal atmosphere for learning. Our curriculum includes faculty-led simulation sessions, traditional lectures, in-room teaching, as well as workshops and journal clubs. Virginia Mason’s faculty are well known internationally in the anesthesiology community and are committed to resident education. Our attendings are engaged in clinical research, quality improvement, hospital leadership, global health, and policy and advocacy. They provide tailored mentoring for residents to excel in any of these areas.

At Virginia Mason you will rotate through a variety of subspecialties, including our distinguished regional anesthesia service. Our off-site rotations include obstetrical anesthesia at Swedish Hospital, the busiest labor and delivery unit in the Pacific Northwest, pediatric anesthesia at Seattle Children’s Hospital, and critical care and trauma anesthesia at one of the leading trauma centers in the nation, Harborview Medical Center. This comprehensive clinical training in some of the leading hospital systems in the nation will make you a perioperative physician consultant, and one of the most competitive candidates for any job or fellowship.

Lastly, while we are committed to training expert anesthesiologists, we promote a healthy work/life balance for our residents. Virginia Mason is located in the heart of Seattle, one of the most vibrant and active cities in the nation. It offers all the amenities of urban life in one of the most beautiful regions of the country – surrounded by three national parks, endless hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, cycling, and much more. We support the health and well-being of our residents through a reasonable call schedule and work hours, generous meal allowance, free parking, social events, counseling resources, and many other benefits. We feel very fortunate to live and train in such a beautiful and diverse location.

We wish you the best with your very important decision of selecting a residency program. We hope you decide to visit the friendliest residency in the nation, and we look forward to meeting you!
