Congratulations on your decision to pursue a career in anesthesiology, and thank you for considering Virginia Mason’s Anesthesiology Residency Program in Seattle. Virginia Mason strives to provide an outstanding residency experience that allows each resident to reach their maximum potential in a collaborative and supportive environment. The renowned faculty, modern didactics, and diverse clinical rotations offer a comprehensive and unique training experience that facilitates every learning style. The goal of the residency program is to provide you with the skills and knowledge to be perioperative, critical care, and pain management specialists ready to tackle future endeavors in fellowship, research, academic or private practice.

The Virginia Mason faculty is well known nationally and internationally among the anesthesia community. They are committed to resident education and training. As residents, learning from some of the leaders in our specialty is invaluable. Our curriculum includes modern learning resources including online modules and faculty-led simulation sessions as well as the traditional lectures and in-room teaching.

With our small class size of nine residents per year, we take pride in our ability to foster a close, personal atmosphere for learning at Virginia Mason. Residents have unique educational opportunities, tailored guidance and coaching from attendings, and develop relationships that will continue throughout your career.

At Virginia Mason you will rotate through a variety of subspecialties, including our distinguished regional anesthesia service. Our off-site rotations include obstetrical anesthesia at Swedish Hospital, the busiest labor and delivery unit in the Pacific Northwest, pediatric anesthesia at Seattle Children’s Hospital, and critical care and trauma anesthesia at one of the leading trauma centers in the nation, Harborview Medical Center. Our selection of elective rotations include echocardiography and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), clinical research, hyperbaric medicine and systems-based practice. This comprehensive training model through some of the leading hospital systems in the nation will make you one of the most competitive candidates for any job or fellowship.

Lastly, while we are committed to training expert anesthesiologists, we promote a healthy work/life balance for our residents. Virginia Mason is located in the heart of Seattle, one of the most vibrant and active cities in the nation. It offers all the amenities of urban life (fine dining, concerts, theater, professional sporting events, museums, etc.) in one of the most beautiful regions of the country – surrounded by three national parks, endless hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, and much more. We support the health and well-being of our residents through a reasonable call schedule and work hours, generous meal allowance, free parking, social events, counseling resources, and many other benefits. We feel very fortunate to live and train in such a beautiful and diverse location.
