Specialized Scopes and ERCP

There has been significant media coverage about a likely connection between specialized scopes and ERCP procedures and patients infected with drug-resistant bacteria. Virginia Mason discovered and addressed a potential connection between the scopes used in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedures and patients infected with a drug-resistant bacteria in 2012 and 2013. The potential for these specialized scopes to harbor bacteria, even following appropriate cleaning, is experienced by hospitals around the world.
