Radiation Oncology

Radiation is one of three primary methods, along with surgery and chemotherapy, that is used to treat cancer. At Virginia Mason, specially trained and experienced radiation oncologists are part of a multidisciplinary approach that uses cutting-edge technology for the most accurate diagnoses, followed by state-of-the-art treatments that give cancer patients the best chance for recovery. Radiation may be used before, during, or after surgery and chemotherapy as part of a targeted approach to shrinking or eradicating tumors. The radiation oncology team at Virginia Mason meets and exceeds the highest national standards for the delivery of radiation therapy.

Patient-Centered Radiation Oncology Care
Radiation therapy is in itself painless. Side effects are usually limited to the area of the body that is being treated. Modern radiation therapy aims to reduce side effects that are unavoidable, such as fatigue and skin irritation, by using the lowest dose possible and targeting only the cancerous tissue. Throughout the course of treatment, a patient's comfort and well-being are a priority. Virginia Mason has long been a pioneer in short-course treatment, also known as hypofractionation.
