Chemotherapy, endocrine/hormonal therapy, and radiation therapy are some of the tools (adjuvant therapies) used to treat breast cancer. Your care team will consider many factors including the number of nodes involved (if the cancer is invasive), primary tumor size, hormone receptor status, tumor grade, the presence of a “bad” gene such as c-erB2 or HER-2 neu, etc., and will design an individualized management course for you. When used prior to surgery, the treatments are known as neoadjuvant therapies.
