Kidney Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, of the 1.3 million cancer cases diagnosed last year, 50,000 were cancers of the kidney. Renal cell carcinoma, the most common type of kidney cancer, occurs mostly in men ages 50 to 70. Its exact cause is unknown, but genetic factors have been linked to the disease. The good news is that we are entering a new era of treatment with the advent of innovative, FDA-approved drugs and other approaches that target kidney cancer cells differently from before. Virginia Mason is on the forefront of these developments. Our multidisciplinary team that cares for kidney cancer patients includes experienced and skillful surgeons, oncologists and kidney specialists who work with other health care professionals to develop a targeted and focused approach to diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. Every treatment plan is uniquely developed for each patient, taking into account his or her needs and particular type of kidney cancer.
