Governance

Virginia Mason is a nonprofit health care provider governed by a board of community volunteers. The Medical Center is a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Board has adopted governance policies and practices to help guide its fulfillment of its commitment to the community and the patients we serve.

In 2008 Virginia Mason won the inaugural Leapfrog Governance for Quality Award for the work its board has done to mobilize the organization to improve quality of patient care.

Board Members
Virginia Mason is governed by a board with wide community representation.

Chairman and CEO
Gary S. Kaplan, MD, FACP, FACMPE, was named Chairman and CEO of Virginia Mason in February 2000.

Committees and Advisory Boards
Virginia Mason's Board has six standing committees and three advisory boards; the Board of Governors, the Bailey-Boushay House Board and the Virginia Mason Foundation Board.
