Turn back time with facial plastic surgery at Virginia Mason, in Seattle.
What people see first as signs of an aging face – deep wrinkles, folds and sagging skin – aren’t simply the result of gravity but also of diminished facial volume. As skin and muscles age they appear to deflate, along with the fullness associated with youth.
Today’s surgical facelift is the most effective procedure to achieve lasting rejuvenation of the middle and lower face. While it doesn’t stop the aging process, a facelift can “turn back time” by lifting facial structures and repositioning soft tissue under the skin. The result is a naturally refreshed, younger look without the tight or pulled back look of older facelift techniques.
Depending on individual needs, the facelift can be performed alone or in conjunction with other rejuvenating procedures, such as:
- Eyelid lift (blepharoplasty)
- Brow lift (forehead lift)
- Lip augmentation
- Soft tissue augmentation
- Facial implants
What Is the Right Age to Have a Facelift?
The truth is there is no right age to have a facelift. Facial aging varies considerably among individuals, affected not only by chronological age but factors like heredity and sun damage.
Women in their mid-forties or early fifties tend to have greater skin elasticity which can produce better, longer-lasting results. However, excellent results can still be obtained for women in their sixties and seventies who are in good health. Normally, results of a facelift will last eight to 10 years or longer, depending on the age and condition of the skin at the time of surgery.
How Do I Know a Facelift is Right for Me?
At Virginia Mason we spend a lot of time understanding each patient’s desired outcome before discussing possible surgical solutions and the techniques that will achieve results. Because Virginia Mason offers a full line of both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures, each treatment plan can include a range of services if needed to address a patient’s goals for an improved overall appearance.
Prior to actual surgery, another informational visit allows a full review of what to expect when undergoing specific procedures, including the risks and benefits. Any health-related issues that might affect a procedure’s outcome will be carefully examined. Take home information with pre-surgery instructions and prescriptions to fill in advance will be provided. Patients are encouraged to ask questions and bring up any concerns until they feel ready to proceed.
Is a Facelift a Major Surgery?
While patients typically go home the same day after facelift surgery, it is a major procedure with significant risks and potential complications. That’s why a physical exam, blood tests and other preoperative tests may be conducted as needed, depending on a patient’s age, health and treatment plan. With the level of expertise our surgical team brings to every case, patients can be confident only the most appropriate and medically sound options are considered for achieving the desired results.
The experience of recovery varies among individuals, but most patients do well with rest and oral pain medications for discomfort. Gauze dressings are usually removed within a couple of days when patients can gently wash their face and hair. Sutures typically are removed or dissolve within a week, after which make-up can be applied. Detailed post-operative instructions will cover how to care for incisions and improve the healing process. Symptoms such as tightness, numbness or redness around the incisions is normal and should resolve once fully healed. Most patients can resume work or other regular activities after two weeks, though some swelling may still be present.
